The US registers more than a million cases of COVID in one day, a world record

The United States registered more than a million cases of coronavirus on Monday, a daily number that had not been reported anywhere in the world during this pandemic, according to a balance by Johns Hopkins University.

Specifically, the country registered 1,080,211 new cases on January 3.

At a time when the omicron variant hits the country hard, the university also recorded 1,688 deaths in 24 hours, a day after Anthony Fauci, the government’s main adviser on this pandemic, declared that the increase in cases in the United States was “Almost vertical”.

The omicron variant, the most contagious to date, accounted for about 59% of the positives recorded in the United States in the week ending Dec. 25, according to government data.

Fauci said the case in South Africa, where this variant was first detected in late November and cases skyrocketed as they declined in a matter of weeks, gave some hope.

Mortality and hospitalization rates in the United States have been much lower in this wave than in previous ones.

The country recorded 9,382 COVID deaths in the past seven days, 10% less than the previous week.

In the past seven days, the country has registered 3.4 million cases, an average of 486,000 per day, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

The previous record for daily cases in the United States was 258,000, reached in the week of January 5-11, 2021.
