Twitter permanently suspends account of Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene

Twitter Inc. It said on Sunday it permanently suspended the personal account of Republican US Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene for messages that repeatedly violated the social network’s disinformation policy on COVID-19.

The Georgia legislator thus becomes the first member of Congress to be permanently banned from a Twitter account.

Previously, the social network had briefly suspended Greene’s account, @mtgreenee, for some tweets about COVID that it described as “misleading.” At least two other Republican congressmen have also received temporary suspensions on Twitter: Jim Banks and Barry Moore.

“Twitter is an enemy of the United States and cannot handle the truth,” Greene said in a statement on the messaging app Telegram, adding that social media platforms “cannot prevent the truth from spreading far and wide. Big tech companies can’t stop the truth. Communist Democrats cannot stop the truth. “

The congresswoman’s official account, @ReptMTG, is still active on Twitter and has 390,000 followers, slightly less than the 465,000 of her banned personal account.

Greene had already come under fire for his comments on the pandemic. Last June, he had to apologize for comparing the requirements of the mask against COVID-19 and vaccines with the Holocaust, in which 6 million Jews died.

Last January, Twitter temporarily blocked Greene’s account after he took on a state election authority over allegations of voter fraud.

Twitter and several other social media platforms banned former President Donald Trump from their services after his supporters stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
