More than 900 victims burned with gunpowder during end of the year festivities in Colombia

The day on which the most victims were registered was December 31, according to authorities from the National Institute of Health. Two deaths were registered.

At least 980 people were burned with pyrotechnic gunpowder in Colombia in December 2021, an increase of 43.91% with respect to the 681 cases registered in the same period 2020, reported this Sunday the National Institute of Health (INS).

According to the most recent figures from the state agency, the day with the most injuries was December 31, with 114 burned, surpassing December 25, in which there were 109. The third day with the most affected was December 7 with 100.

In December, the death of two people, who lost their lives due to the explosion of a dust store in Santa Marta (north), in events that occurred at the beginning of December.

The use of gunpowder in the country in popular festivals is an ancient custom, which is increases in December and it always leaves hundreds of victims.

The 980 burned in December 2021 is the highest figure in the last four years: In December 2018 there were 832 injured; in 2019, 839 and 725 in 2020.

Of the total injured, 691 are of legal age, while 289 are minors old. In Colombia, parents of burned children can lose their children’s parental authority or receive civil penalties such as developing community work to prevent the use of gunpowder, among others.

When breaking down the type of injuries, the 90.3% corresponds to burns, 62.9% to lacerations, 26.2% to contusions, 11.6% to amputations, 5.9% to eye injuries and 1.8% to hearing damage.

Similarly, 71.5% of the cases occurred due to manipulation and 20% of the victims were observeds, added the INS information.

Let’s reflect on fireworks and pollution

The regions with the most registered cases of fireworks injuries in December were Nariño (119), Antioquia (93), Bogotá and Valle del Cauca (75); Cauca (72), Norte de Santander (57) and Córdoba (50).

In Amazonas and Chocó there was one case in each, while in the jungle Vichada there were no burns. (I)
