El Salvador registers 15% fewer murders compared to 2020

In each month last year there were 95 violent deaths, which is an average of 3.1 homicides each day.

El Salvador closed the year 2021 with 15% fewer murders compared to those registered in 2020, according to Police data shared this Sunday by the Press Secretary of the Presidency.

According to the statistics of the National Civil Police (PNC), released in a statement, in the 12 months of 2021 201 homicides were counted less than in the same period of 2020.

The data indicates that last year they were counted 1,140 homicides, a figure “far below”Of the 1,341 murders committed in 2020 and of the 2,398 crimes registered in 2019.

According to the Presidency, the data contrasts with those obtained in past Governments, when averages were up to 18.5 daily murders, as happened in 2015 when 6,656 homicides were counted.

The Executive of Nayib Bukele has implemented the Territorial Control Plan (PCT) since 2019, to which it attributes the drop in murders in recent years.

Most of these crimes are attributed to the Mara Salvatrucha (MS13) and Barrio 18 gangs.

These bands, a phenomenon considered as a legacy of the civil war (1980-1992) and which was strengthened by the deportation of gang members from the United States, have resisted the security plans implemented in the last four administrations. (I)
