The country also reported this first day of 2022 an accident with several deaths in a mine.
India had a tragic start to the year after two events became known in which at least 16 people died. One occurred in a procession and the other in a mine accident.
In the first, at least 12 fatalities occurred and another 13 people were injured in the early hours of this Saturday as a result of a stampede at a Hindu temple in the Jammu and Kashmir region of northern India.
The incident was caused by an altercation between several young people, in the middle of a massive avalanche of Hindu devotees who tried to access a sacred temple located in the city of Katra for the New Year celebrations.
As a result, “12 people died and another 13 were injured,” said Dilbagh Singh, inspector general of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, in statements collected by the Indian agency. YEARS.
Several of the images released by local media shortly before the stampede show a crowd of people trying to access the interior of the temple with hardly any space to move freely between them.
Local authorities reported that a high-level investigation has been opened to clarify what happened.
After learning the facts, the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, expressed his condolences to the victims of this stampede and promised compensation of 200,000 rupees (about 2,360 euros) to the relatives of the deceased and 50,000 rupees (almost 600 euros) to the wounded.
“Very saddened by the loss of life due to a stampede at the Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan temple. Condolences to the grieving families. May the injured recover soon,” he wrote on his official Twitter account.
Stampedes are relatively frequent in India, especially during religious celebrations.
In September 2017, a stampede in a passageway at a station in Bombay, western India, left at least 22 dead and around 25 injured.
In October 2016, at least 19 people died as a result of a human avalanche when thousands of people ran in fear of a bridge collapse in the holy city of Benares, in the north of the country.
In July of the same year, 27 people were killed in Andhra Pradesh (center) in an avalanche after several women fell into a river.
Collapse in mine
Meanwhile, at least four people died and it is not ruled out that several remain trapped as a result of a landslide that occurred this Saturday in a mining area in the state of Haryana, in the north of the country.
“So far four people have died” in a mining area located in Bhiwani, Haryana, by a landslide, confirmed the interior minister of the region, Anil Jil, in his official Twitter account.
The regional minister added that rescue teams have traveled to the area to check if there are more people trapped in the rubble.
At the time of the collapse, an unknown number of workers were working in the area, so the number of victims could increase. (I)
