The President of Bolivia, Luis Arce, spoke by phone with the elected president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, on the importance of deepening the bilateral agenda between both countries, informed the Bolivian leader.
“We had a pleasant telephone conversation with the brother president-elect of Chile, @gabrielboric, with whom we agreed on the need to deepen a bilateral agenda that benefits our peoples. Latin American integration is getting stronger, ”Arce pointed out on Twitter.
The president accompanied his message with a 24-second video in which some shots of him are seen speaking on the phone with the Minister of the Presidency, María Nela Prada, while the Chilean protest song “The United People” plays in the background.
In a few seconds you can hear what seems to be Boric’s voice and the video ends with the caption “Jallalla (long live, in Aymara) the unity of our peoples!”
Boric won the second presidential round in Chile on December 19 with 55.8% of the vote and a difference of more than ten percentage points with respect to his rival, the right-wing José Antonio Kast.
Arce then welcomed Boric’s triumph, considering that this “strengthens Latin American democracy.”
The Bolivian ruling party celebrated the victory of the candidate of the I Approve Dignity coalition due to the ideological affinity with the still leftist deputy and also by understanding that this will open a new stage in the relations between Bolivia and Chile.
The bilateral situation has been particularly tense in recent years due to the lawsuit filed in 2013 by the then government of Evo Morales before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague in search of a ruling that would force Chile to negotiate firmly the centennial maritime claim of Bolivia.
In 2018, the ICJ determined that Chile has no legal obligation to negotiate with Bolivia, although the Bolivian authorities understand that the ruling does not constitute an impediment for there to be a dialogue.
