Figure of household employees in Spain touches minimal records: the reasons

The number of household employees in Spaina very feminized collective and with great weight among foreigners, lives a continuous decrease and in February reached minimum affiliation to social security – less than 350,000 -, in a context of employment creation that leads them to change activity to improve their conditions.

In the fall in the affiliation of the Special Regime of Household Employees – about 20,000 workers in the last year and more than 57,000 comparing with prepaandemia figures – factors such as the improvement of the labor market, especially the services sector, or the appearance of multiservicious companies in the field of domestic cleaning and care influence.

That, together with the progress in obligations and rights of this regime – as unemployment protection – and the increase in the minimum wage in Spain may have led employers, mostly families, to look for other ways to cover these tasks.

This was explained to Efe the confederal secretary of women, equality and working conditions of the union Ccoo, Carolina Vidalwhich is predictable that there has been “A transfer”To other occupations in the Social Services sector.

That transfer will end up happening, in the medium term, because it will make the home employee sector much more regulated, with a collective agreement, more professionalized”, Adds the vice secretary general of the union UGT, Fernando Luján.

There is disparity between the figures of people who say they work in the sector and the affiliates, something that attributes the weight of the economy submerged in domestic employment, “especially when it comes to migrants in an irregular administrative situation”, Says Luján.

The affiliation data has shown in recent years that registered workers represent around two thirds of which they claim to be employees of the household, according to the figures offered by the Active Population Survey (EPA).
