The US president, Donald Trumpannounced a one -month pause, until April 2, in the application of the duty 25% to Canada for products covered by the treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC).
The announcement occurred in the Oval Office of the White House, a few hours after Trump made the same decision regarding the goods of Mexico included in the T-MEC, after talking with the Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum, which she described as “Wonderful woman”
Specifically, the president signed an executive order that delays the imposition of tariffs to Canada and Mexico For a month, until April 2.
The only goods that will be exempt from 25% of US tariffs will be those covered by the T-MEC, which Trump renegotiated during his first term (2017-2021) to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
Much of the trade between the three nations is governed by the T-MECalthough not all products are covered by the agreement.
Now a period of uncertainty opens for companies that trade between the three countries, since they can only benefit from this exemption from tariffs for a month.
Trump imposed last Tuesday, March 4, 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, their main commercial partners.
However, a day later, the White House announced a one -month pause in the application of these tariffs for the automotive sector of both countries, after conversations with the main US manufacturers –General Motors, Ford and Stellantis-, which assemble vehicles in Mexico and Canada.
This moratorium for cars and its components will be in force until April 2.
The president has repeatedly described tariffs like “The most beautiful word in the dictionary”And he already used them as a negotiation tool both in his first mandate and in the current one to obtain concessions in commerce, migration and security.
