Lima.- The Government of Peru accused the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaumhaving violated the principle of non -intervention and not respecting the rule of law after the president expressed his support for former president Pedro Castillo (2021-2022), which remains in prison since it gave a failed autogolpe.
“The Ministry of Foreign Relations of Peru rejects and expresses its protest for the statements of Mrs. Claudia Sheinbaum, which reflect a total ignorance of the failed coup d’etat that Mr. Pedro Castillo made on December 7, 2022,” said the Peruvian government through a statement released by the Foreign Ministry.
He added that “this sustained ideologized position of Mrs. Sheinbaum demonstrates an disrespectful marking by the rule of law and the principle of non -intervention.”
He also considered that this position contradicts “the fundamental guidelines that support the Estrada doctrine, which the Mexican government says it defends”, in reference to the theory for foreign policy that dictates the non -interference of Mexico in matters of other nations.
The Foreign Ministry concluded the statement by demanding for Peru “the same degree of respect that the Mexican government claims in its relations with other states.”
Last Friday, Sheinbaum said he held a meeting with Castillo’s lawyer, Argentine Guido Croxatto, during which he asked for the support of the embassy to file a complaint before international instances for the “injustice” that the former president and president live He said “of course” they will support him.
“(Croxatto) he raised us, because he is going to present, I do not know if he can make it public, but he will present in different international instances the violation that was committed to the rights of Pedro Castillo. Then, he came to request the support of the ambassadors who could be in these instances, ”said the president during her morning press conference.
Sheinbaum said he will support Castillo and pointed out that this support will be given within the framework of the laws of the country. “Of course, we are going to support,” he emphasized.
He recalled that Mexico agrees to point out the “injustice” that the Peruvian ex -president is suffering and said that the lawyer has many difficulties to see him, so he insisted on supporting the former governor.
Sheinbaum had not ruled in depth on the Peruvian situation, but has followed the foreign policy of its predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024), who considered “spurious” to the Government of Dina Boluarte in Peru after the arrest of Castillo in Castillo in December 2022 for a failed attempted state self -golpe.
On March 4, the oral trial against Castillo will begin in Lima in the case in which the Public Ministry asks for 34 years in prison for the ex -president, which he accuses of being the author of the crimes of rebellion and abuse of authority.
After pronouncing this failed Autogolpe on December 7, 2022, the former president entered the Barbadillo prison, where he is serving preventive detention in this case and also for another of corruption, and the wife of the ex -president, Lilia Paredes, and his two children, they received political asylum in Mexico.
For this situation, Mexico and Peru maintain relations only at the level of business managers since February 2023, while Sheinbaum did not invite any Peruvian representative to his investiture, on October 1.
