South America is the region with the worst records in this COVID-19 pandemic in the world, with the deadliest waves and the highest accumulation of deaths from this disease on the planet.
Since the deaths of patients with COVID-19 began to be registered, in South America there have been 2,740 deaths per million inhabitants, according to the Our World in Data database. In the United States there were 2,450; in Europe, 2,000; and in Asia, 267.
The maximum number of daily deaths throughout this pandemic also occurred in South America, with an average of 10.85 per million inhabitants in April this year.
However, the subcontinent ends 2021 with an auspicious data: it is the one with the highest vaccination against the coronavirus, with 63.4% of its population completely inoculated (one or two doses, as appropriate to each drug) and 74.3% of its 434 million people with at least one dose, according to official figures published by the Pan American Health Organization as of Thursday 23.

Oceania has 58% of its population inoculated with two doses and Asia with 55%. Last is Africa, with just 8.8% of its inhabitants with the complete vaccination process.
The best of the best
The country with the best vaccination level in South America is Chile, where 85.6% of its inhabitants received the complete guideline. There, children from 3 years old can receive the injections.
They are followed by Uruguay (76.6%), Argentina (76.5%), Ecuador (69.1%) and Brazil (65.7%).
In worse condition come Guyana, Bolivia and Suriname, below 40%.
Third doses
Although two South American countries —Chile and Uruguay— register high levels of booster vaccination (52.7% and 42.7%, respectively), the average for the subcontinent is considerably lower (8.8%).
Europe is the continent with the highest number of booster doses applied (21.5%).
In North America, 13.4% of the population received the booster dose.
Oceania (5%) and Asia (4%) are the regions where fewer third doses have been administered, except Africa, where the application of third doses has been marginal.
