Armed gangs attacked the motorcade of Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille last Monday in Port-au-Prince as he was preparing to leave the State University Hospital of Haitiwhere he had made a surprise visit.
According to witnesses of the ambush, Kenyan journalists and police were trapped inside the capital’s main public hospital for several minutes due to the attack by the coalition of gangs “Vivre Ensemble” (Live together).
This was followed by violent clashes between Haitian and Kenyan police and members of armed gangs.
The attack by these violent groups, which continue to control the centre of the Haitian capital, raised tensions one more day in the capital.

The forces of Kenyan police began deploying in Haiti at the end of Juneas part of the multinational security support mission led by that African country.
In October 2023, the UN Security Council authorized the dispatch of a mission to support the Haitian National Police, in response to a request made a year earlier by the Haitian authorities to eradicate violence by armed gangs.
Last year alone, there were some 8,000 victims of gang violence in Haiti, which has come to control 80% of Port-au-Prince and other areas of the country, according to UN figures.
