A woman who had to be leg amputated, from the knee down, due to a circulatory problem caused by an infection after getting the pedicure will receive 1.75 million dollars in compensation.
Tammy’s Nail 2 Beauty Salon, located in Florida (United States), has been sentenced to pay Clara Shellman for the damage caused, which goes beyond the amputation itself. As a result of the medical expenses derived from the infection, the 55-year-old woman lost her home.
The infection spread rapidly through the foot and lower leg due to peripheral arterial disease that Shellman suffers from. The complaint states that the utensils used by the employee who did Shellman’s pedicure in 2018 they were not clean.
“When she frequented this salon, Ms. Shellman had a reasonable expectation that the professionals working there would keep their tools clean to protect her health and safety,” explained her attorney, Paul Fulmer.
Although he considers that “no amount of money can really make up for a life-changing injury“, the lawyer has been happy that this agreement” will compensate her for a world of pain and suffering that was not her fault. “
The lawsuit was filed in May 2020 and the owners of the defendant business initially denied allegations that required sanitary conditions had not been met. In fact, they claimed that Shellman was responsible for what happened to him for not having gone to the doctor immediately nor “have made reasonable efforts to slow the spread of the infection.”
