US Vice President, Kamala Harrisrecalled his past as a prosecutor on Tuesday to harshly attack the Republican candidate, Donald Trumpwho is the first former president convicted of a crime in the country’s history and of whom the Democrat said: “I know well what his kind are like.”
Harris began her rally in Milwaukee, the first since mathematically securing the Democratic nomination on Monday night, recalling his career as a prosecutor, including his work as California attorney general, to compare himself to Trump and promise to hold him accountable.
“As a prosecutor, I faced criminals of all kinds: those who abused women, scammers who deceived consumers, cheaters who broke the rules for personal gain. So hear me out: I know the guys like Trump“Harris said.
His words were greeted with applause by the 3,000 people, according to the campaign’s count, who crowded into a high school in Milwaukee, in the key state of Wisconsin. Attendees greeted Harris with visibly emotional cheers, clapping, cheering and chanting her name: “Kamala, Kamala!”
One of the most emotional moments came when Harris began listing some of the policies Trump could implement if he returns to the White House, such as restrictions on access to health care for those with chronic diseases such as asthma, something that was eliminated by Barack Obama’s health care reform (2009-2017).
“America has tried these failed economic policies before, but we are not going to back down. We are not going to turn back. I’ll tell you why we are not going to back down – because ours is a fight for the future!” Harris exclaimed, prompting an instant reaction from the audience.
“We’re not going back!” “We’re not going back!” the crowd chanted back with such enthusiasm that Harris was forced to pause, smiling at the crowd’s effusiveness.
Throughout, Harris tried to draw a clear contrast with Trump. She highlighted how she dedicated herself to putting criminals behind bars during her career as a prosecutor that culminated in the charge of California Attorney General (2011-2017), while Trump last April was found guilty of 34 charges of falsifying business records to conceal a relationship with actress Stormy Daniels.
The vice president further elaborated on these differences by defining her campaign as a movement “driven by the people” and committed to “the American middle class,” while He claimed that large corporations and billionaires are behind his Republican rival’s campaign.
Harris’s speech generated such excitement that the campaign was forced to move the event to a larger venue. With more than 3,000 attendees, this was the largest rally to date, surpassing those of the American president, Joe Bidenone of the members of the Democratic electoral team told EFE.
This was Harris’ first rally since Biden ended his re-election campaign on Sunday and endorsed his vice presidentwho just 36 hours after officially launching her electoral campaign has mathematically become the Democratic nominee.
Harris gave her speech in Milwaukee, the same city where just a few days ago the Republican National Convention was held, in which Trump was officially proclaimed as the candidate of that political force for the November elections and elected Senator JD Vance as a running mate.
“The road to the White House goes through Wisconsin!” Harris exclaimed at one point in her speech, acknowledging the state’s importance, on what was her fifth visit this year.
Wisconsin is part of the so-called ‘blue wall’, term used to describe the group of states, including Pennsylvania and Michigan, that voted consistently Democratic between 1992 and 2012 and are considered key to the party’s electoral success.
