American leaders send signs of “respect” to Biden after he declines re-election

Several American leaders on Monday backed the decision of the US president, Joe Biden, to give up seeking re-election next November, considering it to be “I respect” and as a sample of “courage”as well as sending him a message of thanks.

At his daily press conference, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador described Biden’s decision as “sovereign”, arguing that “it is up to the governing authorities of the United States.” He also stressed that it is a “good ruler”” that has had “Very good results” during his term.

For her part, Claudia Sheinbaum, who will succeed Obrador in the Mexican Presidency starting next October 1, expressed that she “greatly respects” Biden’s withdrawal from the electoral race and that the next Government that she will lead “will work with whoever the people of USA”.

Regarding the possibility of a woman like US Vice President Kamala Harris being elected as president, Sheinbaum said that “It is a pleasure that women participate“but reiterated that it will be American voters who will decide.”

The head of state of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, also spoke with “respect” in an interview with foreign correspondents on Monday, stating that “only he“(Biden) could tell whether he was fit to continue or not.

Now the Democratic Party “will choose a new candidate or a new candidate“Lula da Silva said, adding that as President of Brazil, he should only worry about having a “good relationship” with whoever wins the elections next November.

In an apparent allusion to former president and Republican candidate Donald Trump (2017-2021), he noted that this would be the case as long as “the democratic process is not put at risk.”

“This is a personal decision by President Biden, thinking of his country, his people and the Democratic Party. It must be respected. We, as an ally of the United States, are prepared to work with the Administration that is elected in November. We have no concerns whatsoever about what will happen in the next (US) elections.”said Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha, after being asked by journalists.

On the other hand, the former president of Uruguay Julio María Sanguinetti (1985-1990 and 1995-2000) considered that Biden “He made a brave and effective decision” by stressing that at this point “he was not a good candidate” for the simple reason that there was “very widespread” questioning.

But he stressed that “He has been a very good president of the United States,” which “has rescued many of the historical values of American democracy.”

Although diplomatic relations between the United States and Venezuela have been broken since 2019, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro said that Biden took the “the most sensible and correct decision, he prioritized his family, his health, and realized that, at that age and with his health weakened, he could not take the reins of his country and much less a presidential candidacy.”

However, in his announcement, Biden did not mention his family or his health, and as an explanation for his decision he stated that the best thing for his country is for him to withdraw and “focus solely on accomplishing” with their “duties as president for the remainder” of the mandate.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also responded to Biden’s remarks, giving both him and First Lady Jill Biden the thumbs up. “thank you”in addition to calling it a “big man” and? “Everything he does is guided by his love for his country. As president, he is a partner to Canadians and a true friend.”

The governor of Puerto Rico, Pedro Pierluisi, also thanked him for ““his exemplary public service and for always doing everything possible to treat Puerto Ricans fairly as American citizens.”

He also highlighted that the Biden Administration allowed Puerto Rico, which is a free state associated with the United States, to benefit from “historic legislation to improve the nation’s infrastructure and address climate change.”

Allies of far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022) took advantage of the US president’s decision to criticize Brazilian head of state Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and progressive forces on Sunday.

“Biden is out! When is the ‘Brazilian Biden’ going to leave?” exclaimed, in apparent allusion to Lula, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, one of the sons of former President Jair Bolsonaro and, like his father, aligned with the Republican candidate, Donald Trump.

Jair Bolsonaro has not yet commented publicly on Biden’s decision.

Senator Ciro Nogueira, a close ally of Bolsonaro and who was Minister of the Presidency during his term (2019-2022), interpreted the news as “a victory for those who were gagged by a narrative that Trump was absolute evil and Biden, the unquestionable good”.

Biden, 81, who is convalescing after contracting Covid-19, withdrew from his candidacy on Sunday in a letter he posted on social media, following strong pressure from senior members of the Democratic Party.
