US Vice President Kamala Harris has raised more than $81 million (just over 74.4 million euros) in just 24 hours after President Joe Biden announced he would not seek re-election, marking a milestone in the current US presidential campaign.
The Harris campaign, which inherited many of Biden’s operatives, believes that this large amount of fundraising shows the enthusiasm for her candidacy. “The historic support for Vice President Harris represents exactly “the kind of grassroots energy and enthusiasm that wins elections”campaign spokesman Kevin Muñoz said in a statement.
According to the campaign, the enthusiasm is reflected in the large number of new donors. Specifically, More than 888,000 people made contributions in the last 24 hourswith 60% of those being new donors in this year’s election cycle. Additionally, Harris’ team has recruited 43,000 new donors who have pledged to give regularly, with more than half opting for weekly contributions.
The campaign’s official social media account, @KamalaHQ, also doubled its followers overnight. Trump’s biggest haul this election cycle was more than $50 million, raised after he was found guilty at his New York City trial for irregular payments in late May. By comparison, Biden raised $38 million in the days following his contentious debate.
Biden announced on Sunday the end of his presidential campaign after a revolt within the Democratic Party with members of the House and Senate publicly calling for him to step down. In that June 27 debate against Republican nominee former President Donald Trump, the 81-year-old incumbent projected an aged image and struggled to articulate some sentences.
