A railway company has planned a railway line 520 kilometers to cross the Amazona project that defines itself as green, but with a big problem: affects indigenous populations, some of them in isolation.
Faced with this, the so-called quilombolas, people descended from slaves, use music and dance to show their unity in their protest. They demonstrate alongside indigenous peoples from this region of the Brazilian Amazon. They will all be victims of this huge industrial project that will culminate in a port for the export of soybeans and minerals to China, the United States and Europe.
“It will pass through 22 tiny towns,” says Verena Glass of Brazil’s Anti-GPM Articulation, and its impact on people “will be very strong.” In addition, this line “passes very close to six indigenous territories that live isolated or in voluntary isolation“.
But the truth is that this project “It could be catastrophic for the indigenous peoples of the region.“says Sarah Shenker, a campaigner at Survival International.
Behind this project are three Portuguese businessmen who have the support of Germany’s main railway company. A company that has participated in other devastating constructions, such as the Mayan Train in Mexico, where caverns and aquifers of great natural and historical value have been destroyed.
Now, who Those in danger are the people who live by and for their forest. The law requires their permission, but companies take advantage of their ignorance. “They ask them to sign a document stating that they agree with the project, but they have no idea what it is about,” says Verena Glass.
And there are precedents. Not so long ago, this other railway project wiped out thousands of indigenous people, including members of the Awá, the most endangered tribe on Earth. Many Awá died “As a result of that project a few decades ago, others became ill and, to this day, the Awá are suffering the impacts,” says Sarah Shenker, who says that “they should have learned from the past.” That is why today people are raising their voices to prevent another similar massacre.
