The former president of USA and presidential candidate Donald Trump has in Lara Trump a great asset in his aspirations towards White House. His son Eric’s wife not only supports him as a daughter-in-law, but also as co-chair of the Republican Party’s national committee.
Born in North Carolina 41 years ago and married since 2014 to the third son of the New York magnate, the television presenter and producer has thrown herself into Trump’s campaign and, since March, with her new position within the party, is helping to put him at the Republican’s mercy.
The committee controls the electoral machinery and the finances of the party and, in her new role, Lara Trump has had a prominent role in the national convention, which from this Monday until Thursday brings together conservatives in Milwaukee to formalize the politician’s candidacy for the White House and also that of his “number two”, Ohio Senator JD Vance.
On the first day of the convention, Lara accompanied her father-in-law to the podium where he reappeared to greet his family for the first time since the assassination attempt he suffered last Saturday, in which he was wounded in the ear.
She was with her husband and other children of the former president: Tiffany and Donald Trump Jr., and his fiancée, Kimberly Guilfoyle, supporting the former president at a time when he seemed especially vulnerable and restrained.
On Tuesday, Lara Trump, mother of a six-year-old boy and a four-year-old girl, gave her final speech of the day at Fiserv Stadium, the epicentre of the great Republican party and where her first words in fact highlighted her family ties.
“Nothing prepares you as a daughter-in-law to see firsthand how someone tries to kill someone you love. Nothing prepares you to quickly grab the remote control so that your children do not witness something that will remain etched in their memory of their grandfather for the rest of their lives,” He told delegates who unanimously confirmed the former president’s candidacy on Monday.
Lara Trump has gained political prominence, especially since Ivanka Trump, the former president’s second daughter, decided not to participate in this new campaign, as well as her husband, Jared Kushner, after having been part of his Administration (2017-2021).
Public appearances by former first lady Melania Trump are also rare. She has not yet been seen in Milwaukee and is not listed as a speaker on the convention programme, so Lara occupies the highest political position in the former president’s inner circle of women.
It was Trump himself who asked her to take on the role of co-chair of the committee. She had helped in previous campaigns, but this step forward seemed too big for her. According to The New York Times, she ended up accepting because “In life you have to do things that scare you.”
Before Trump ran for president, Lara told the same newspaper that neither she nor anyone else in the family was particularly interested in that world. But since the Republican took over the Oval Office, that surname has become linked to the country’s history.
At the moment, the former president leads the voting intentions: a 42.3% of voters say they will vote for him on November 5, 2.2 percentage points more than President Joe Biden, according to the average of polls conducted by the website FiveThirtyEight.
“Trump is a lion, he is fearless and that is what this country needs right now. (…) No one can deny that we were better off when he was in power. When I look at him I see a wonderful father, father-in-law and grandfather. A man who has sacrificed for his family and who has truly sacrificed for his country.”Lara Trump concluded.
