The Voto Latino organization attacked JD Vance on Monday, the newly appointed vice presidential candidate and running mate of the former president. Donald Trump (2017-2021), whom he accused of having an extensive anti-immigrant agenda.
In its statement, the organization recalled that Vance, a senator from Ohio, has opposed measures that grant a path to citizenship for immigrants and has amplified the former president’s “dehumanizing rhetoric” about immigrants.
Vance, 39, has defended Trump’s claim that immigrants are “poisoning the lifeblood of the country.”
In July of last year, the senator introduced legislation known as the Timely Departure Act that would require foreigners seeking to enter the United States on temporary visas to pay between $5,000 and $15,000 in bond or cash payment to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Foreigners would get their money back only if they left the United States in accordance with the terms of their visas. The bill, which died in the Senate, was intended to discourage visitors from overstaying their visas.
“The Latino community will not forget Vance’s extensive anti-immigrant agenda in November,” said Voto Latino co-founder and president María Teresa Kumar.
The activist added that the Republican senator has also promoted xenophobic conspiracy theories. “He (Vance) has shown time and again that he will put his loyalty to Trump above our democracy and the fundamental rights of the people,” said the director of Voto Latino.
In addition to his anti-immigrant rhetoric, Kumar believes Vance has also fueled allegations of fraud in the 2020 presidential election and downplayed the January 6, 2021, insurrection.
The Republican senator has also supported a nationwide ban on abortion without exceptions, among other ultra-conservative policies.
“Voters are tired of election deniers and extremists who are eager to undermine our democracy and they will prove it at the ballot box,” Kumar said.
