Daniel Obajtek may be unhappy. MEPs will get a pay rise, but he is used to other amounts

The pay rises in the European Parliament will come into effect in July. The new term of office of MEPs will now receive around eight thousand euros net per month. One of them will be Daniel Obajtek. Despite the pay rise, such money will not impress him. The former head of Orlen could count on much higher earnings in his previous position.

Not long ago, the monthly salary of an MEP was 10,075.42 euros gross. After tax, it was 7,854 euros, or 33,432.12 zlotys. Now, a few days before the inaugural session of the new EP, the rates have increased.

The website states that the current monthly salary of an MEP is 10,377.43 euros gross. After deducting all taxes and insurance contributions, the salary is 8,089.63 euros, or the equivalent of 34,435.13 zlotys. This means that the monthly salary of an MEP will be higher than before by about one thousand zlotys.

One of the MEPs in the new term of the European Parliament will be Daniel Obajtek, the former CEO of Orlen. As the CEO of Poland’s largest fuel concern, he received a salary of less than PLN 140,000 per month. Now, in the EP, he can count on slightly over PLN 34,000. This is at least 3 times less, because Daniel Obajtek could also count on large bonuses during his work as CEO of Orlen.

Pay rise for MEPs. More are already planned

The increase in salaries is the result of inflation. At the end of April, the European Parliament published . We read in it that the indexation (a system linking salaries to the level of inflation) of salaries in the amount of 5.3% was planned for July 2024. However, this is not the end of the increases. As it results from the document, the next indexations are planned for April and July 2025. They will amount to 0.6% and 3.7%, respectively.

The salary of an MEP is regulated by the statute of the Member of the European Parliament. The salary is 38.5% of the basic salary of a judge of the Court of Justice of the European Union. All MEPs receive the same salary.
