The government of the president Joe Biden has extended this Monday the license that authorizes some export transactions of Liquid gas of Petroleum to Venezuela, the US Treasury Department reported.
The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), which is part of this department, will allow “all transactions related to the export or re-export, direct or indirect, of liquefied petroleum gas to Venezuela,” by the Venezuelan government, the state-owned company Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) or any entity that has any participation in this company, it said in a statement.
As in 2023, it does not allow payment in kind for oil or derivative products or transactions involving blocked persons. Washington applies a battery of sanctions to Venezuela after the re-election in 2018 of Nicolás Maduro, which it considers “fraudulent”These measures include, since 2019, the prohibition of marketing Venezuelan oil.
The 40C license comes into effect this Monday for one year and replaces one issued on July 10, 2023.
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), a mixture of gases composed mainly of butane and propane, is important for Venezuela, once an energy powerhouse that suffers from a fuel shortage in some areas of the country.
The Maduro government says Venezuela and the United States agreed to “improve relations” after resuming a dialogue process last week, three weeks before the presidential elections in the Caribbean country.
Washington is highly critical of the way the electoral process is developing and the obstacles that the opposition faces in participating in it. The White House has also criticised the arrest of opposition members in the last six months (46, according to the NGO Access to Justice) and the decision to withdraw the invitation to the European Union to observe the electoral process of the presidential elections.
