Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the French radical left, has called on French President Emmanuel Macron to appointment of a prime minister from the left-wing alliance who, according to polls, has won the legislative elections.
In a speech delivered to hundreds of people gathered in the capital to celebrate the victory of the left, Mélenchon considered a “relief” that victory did not occur that had been predicted from the extreme right. However, the politician also believes that the results of the legislative elections “confirm the defeat of the president and his coalition”, after which he has asked him to “Don’t try to escape from that defeat with subterfuge.”
Thus, the leader of the radical left has argued that the head of the French Government must be a member of the New Popular Frontthe left-wing coalition that his party, the radical La France Insoumise, formed with socialists, communists and ecologists. “And it must implement its programme, and only its programme,” stressed Mélenchon, who refused to enter into negotiations with Macron’s coalition.
In addition, the French politician has stated that the new Executive has to implement its program “by decree”“, with measures such as repealing the pension reform approved last year by Macron, introducing a price freeze on certain products and raising the minimum wage.
