The new British Prime Minister, the Labour Keir Starmerhas gathered his newly formed cabinet for the first time this Saturday, after a resounding victory in the elections, which he says has given his party “a clear mandate” to govern “for change” in the United Kingdom.

Among the future plans of the new Executive, the brand new ‘premier’ has been very clear in stating that the controversial immigration plan of the previous conservative Government, the so-called ‘plan rwanda’ to deport asylum seekers who arrive in the UK via the English Channel to that country, is “dead and buried”.

This was stated in a press conference held in Downing Street after that first meeting with his team of ministersto whom he has conveyed “how to implement the plans” detailed in his electoral programme and “exactly” what he expects “in terms of standards, execution and the trust that the country has placed in them”.

Among his most immediate plans, the new head of the British Executive has announced that will visit the four nations of the country -Scotland, Wales, England and Northern Ireland- after the “clear mandate” sent from all of them at the ballot box. “For the first time in more than 20 years, we have a majority in England, Scotland and Wales and this is a clear mandate to govern in all four corners of the United Kingdom and, for that reason, I am going out tomorrow to be in all four nations,” he said.

The tour, he explained, will start in Scotland, continue in Northern Ireland and then pass through Wales before returning to England in order to “establish the way of working throughout the United Kingdom”, which, he promised, “will be different and better than what has been the case in recent years.”

The Labour leader has promised that will not rest “until change is achieved” for which citizens have voted and has defended that this Executive has “a service mentality”. “Our country comes first, and the party, second. And it is not a slogan. It is what our decisions are based on,” he asserted.

New government team

Starmer has surrounded himself with heavyweights from his team when he was in opposition as senior ministers in the Labour government, with Angela Rayner as ‘number two’ and Rachel Reeves as head of the Ministry of Economy. David Lammy He is the new head of Foreign Affairs, John Healey will lead Defense, Yvette Cooper takes over the Interior and the coordinator of the Labour campaign, Pat McFaddenwill lead the Cabinet Office – comparable to the Presidency – as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.

In front of his new cabinet, the Prime Minister has stressed the “enormous amount of work to be done” that awaits his Government after winning the general election with a large majority. “Colleagues, it is absolutely fantastic to welcome you to the Cabinet, our first meeting. And it has been the honour and privilege of my life to have been invited by the King, His Majesty the King, yesterday to form a Government and to form the Labour Government of 2024,” Starmer told his new ministers.

“And now we hold our first cabinet meeting. With that I welcome you all. We have a huge amount of work to do, so let’s get on with it now.“, he added, to applause from the new ministers.
