Barbie doll exhibition in London, featuring the model that travelled to space

London’s Design Museum opens an exhibition dedicated to the doll on Friday Barbie, which is celebrating 65 years of history, with more than 180 models, including the one that spent six months in space in 2022.

A year after the success of Greta Gerwig’s film, starring actress Margot Robbie, Barbie arrives at the Design Museum, west of London, for an exhibition that shows the evolution of “the most famous doll in the world” since its creation. The exhibition begins with the “Barbie number 1”the first model created, in 1959, by the American company Mattel.

The exhibition also features the surfer “Sunset Malibu Barbie”, very popular in the 1970s, or the “Totally hair Barbie”, from 1992, with her long hair, the best-selling in the world with 10 million copies.

The first black Barbies or Barbies in wheelchairs also appear on the show. The exhibition organizers said they were proud to display “the only Barbie that has been in space.”

The doll model was designed to resemble Italian Samantha Cristoforetti, the first European to command the International Space Station (ISS).

The Italian astronaut travelled to space with the doll for six months in 2022. The exhibition allows you to watch videos of Samantha Cristoforetti in space, floating alongside the doll.

“We are delighted that Samantha’s doll will be presented for the first time since her return from the ISS at the Design Museum,” said Danielle Thom, curator of the exhibition, quoted in a press release.

For Tim Marlow, director of the museum, “Design has been at the heart of Barbie’s story since its creation”Visitors will be able to see “the influence of designers and architects, from Florence Knoll to Frank Gehry, on the world of Barbie,” according to the institution.

The exhibition also dedicates a section to Ken, Barbie’s eternal male companion, as well as to his younger sister, Skipper.
