France could be faced with a scenario that would not be unprecedented in its history. Following the legislative elections to be held in two rounds on 30 June and 7 July, there could be a French prime minister who would not be of the same political affiliation as the current president.
The main favorite according to the polls would be Jordan Bardellarepresentative of the far-right party of Marine Le Pen, who would need an absolute majority to win in this first round, a scenario that does not seem viable. The ideal would be to obtain the necessary 289 deputies in the second round to be sworn in at the age of 28.
If what is known as cohabitation occurs, it would be the fourth time it has taken place in France. It’s already happened twice with François Mitterrand (Jacques Chirac and Édouard Balladur) and again with Jacques Chirac (Lionel Jospin).
However, this time it would be harder than the previous ones. Le Pen’s ultra party bears hardly any similarities with Macron’s, being more friends of Vladimir Putin than of NATO. The truth is that experts see it as almost impossible to reach agreements between any of the parties, which opens up even more unknowns in a country mired in uncertainty.
