The Government of Hungary, headed by the ultranationalist Viktor Orbánassumes the rotating and semi-annual presidency of the European Union (EU) on July 1 under the motto ‘Make Europe great again‘(Let’s make Europe great again), almost a copy of the same slogan with which former US president Donald Trump triumphed in the 2016 elections.

Given the unequivocal nod to Trump and his admirers, including Orbán himself, the country’s Minister of European Affairs, János Boka, clarified this Tuesday, when presenting the priorities of the Magyar presidency and its motto, that he intends to highlight that “together we are more than separately“.

Europe is experiencing an exceptional situationwith problems such as a war in the neighborhood or immigration,” Boka highlighted at a press conference, while promising that the presidency of his country will be “an honest intermediary.” The Magyar Executive has established seven priorities: improving competitiveness, common defense and the defense of external borders, as well as advancing enlargement and promoting cohesion policies, agriculture and addressing demographic problems.

Furthermore, Bóka indicated that in the coming months he expects progress in the functioning of the Schengen zone of free movement and the fight against anti-Semitism. Hungary will also promote discussions on topics linked to higher education or the defense of cultural heritage. The logo of the Magyar presidency is based on the Rubik’s Cubean invention by Hungarian Ernö Rubik that turns half a century this year.
