IICA and FDA launch project in Peru to promote agricultural exports to the US.

San José, June 17 (EFE).- The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the Food and Drug Administration of the United States (FDAfor its acronym in English) reported this Monday the launch of the virtual platform ‘Producing with Safety’ in Peru, with the aim of promoting exports of fresh agricultural products To united states.

The project that took place in alliance with the Association of Exporters of Peru (Adex) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDAfor its acronym in English) will allow producers of fresh agricultural products to access training materials on the regulatory safety requirements for exporting to the North American market, IICA explained in a statement.

The digital platform contains self-manageable training materials for producers, farm owners or supervisors on the US Food Safety Modernization Act’s Produce Safety Rule (PSR). FSMA), such as online videos, posters, infographics and self-assessment tools”explained the IICA Agricultural Health specialist, Ana Marisa Cordero.

Data from the Regional Office of the FDA for Latin America show that the previous year Peru was ranked 14th as a supplier of imported fresh fruit in the United States. Furthermore, in 2023, Peru represented 40% of imports of table grapes, 49% of blueberries, 16% of mangoes, 7% of citrus fruits and 5% of avocados.

For his part, the president of the Fruit and Vegetable Committee of AdexElkin Vanegas, reported that in 2023 Peruvian agricultural exports “They had exponential growth generating more than US$ 10,202 million, with an increase of 4.2% compared to 2022”.

This growth has positioned fresh blueberries, fresh grapes, asparagus and quinoa grains as the main export products, generating more than US$ 5,681 million”concluded Vanegas.

The launch event held at the Association of Exporters of Peru had more than 65 participants from the public agricultural and trade sector, the agro-export sector and producers, among others.
