The Brazilian senator and former judge Sergio Morowho during his time as a magistrate imprisoned the current president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, denounced that there is a “spirit of persecution“against those who fought the corruption in the country.
“We can clearly see that today there is a bit of a spirit of persecution against the people who acted in the Operation Lava Jatoperhaps due to Lula’s government“, he claimed Moor in an interview with the newspaper Folha de São Paulo published this Sunday.
As a magistrate, Sergio Moro He led the processes in the first instance of the corruption scandal uncovered in the state oil company Petrobras by Operation Lava Jato, which led to dozens of businessmen and politicians, including Lula, being imprisoned.
Lula’s convictions for corruption were later annulled by the Supreme Court due to an error in judicial jurisdiction and, subsequently, all investigations against him ended up being archived in lower courts.
The high court also declared that Moro acted “partial” in one of the cases against the progressive leader, who returned to power on January 1, 2023.
The senator is still being investigated by the National Council of Justice and will be tried in the Supreme Court for alleged slander against one of the eleven judges of Brazil’s highest court.
Recently, he was acquitted by the Electoral Justice in another process for abuse of economic power in the 2022 legislative elections, which jeopardized his seat in the Upper House.
Moor maintains that they have tried to annul his mandate “in retaliation for the fight against corruption” that he promoted from the courts.
“Until now I have never seen any accusation against me that has a minimum of consistency”, he asserted.
Moorwho left the courts to be Minister of Justice in the Government of far-right President Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022), insisted that against all those convicted of Lava Jato “there was robust evidence” and stressed that it is not considered “personal enemy” by Lula.
Likewise, he described as “bad” the management of the head of state, who was criticized for not having a public security project and being “dismantling the prevention of the fight against corruption”.
