Europe advances in vaccination with uneven rhythm one year after the first doses

One year after the first shots of vaccines against Covid-19 Europe It is progressing at an uneven pace, with large percentages of the population vaccinated in southern countries and small in eastern states of the continent, where mistrust of these preparations seems evident.

Russia opened the door to vaccination on December 5, while the European Union countries did so mostly on December 27 and this year the application of sera – considered the best option against the virus – has been accompanied by various measures , such as social distance, masks and, in more extreme cases, restrictions on mobility and economic activities.

The most applied

Portugal, with 10.3 million inhabitants, has vaccinated 87.5% of the population. If vaccinated people over twelve years of age are counted, the total immunized is 98.1%. As in other countries, they are already making progress in the booster dose, the third, as well as in the child population between 5 and 11 years old.

Spain, for its part, has almost 90% of the population, of just over 47 million inhabitants, with the complete schedule of the vaccine and the third dose is administered to people over 50 years of age, with the prospect of expanding it in briefly to those of 40 and while, at the same time, the first doses are already applied to children between 5 and 11 years old.

In the Republic of Ireland, 7.4 million vaccines have been administered to those over 12 years of age, a population group of 4.8 million people. Thus, 90.45% have received the complete schedule until this Monday, while 32.7% are already vaccinated with the booster dose.

In the United Kingdom, 81.8% have received the complete vaccination schedule -a total of 47’051,876 doses-, according to the Government of Boris Johnson, while 50.4% of adults have already received the booster dose, although the omicron variant it is wreaking havoc in the country, where these days infection rates are higher than 90,000 a day.

The Netherlands was the one who later began to inoculate its citizens in the EU, giving the first injection on January 6, but it has now vaccinated 84.3% of the population over 12 years of age with the full schedule. Also, on December 20, it began to be applied to thousands of children between 5 and 11 years old with an underlying medical risk. The rest of children without previous illnesses will have the option of receiving the vaccine in the second half of January.

In Italy, 85.49% of the population older than 12 years have received two doses and the booster dose has been started for all ages from six months after the first inoculation.

Eastern skepticism

Skeptical or distrustful, eastern countries are the least advanced in vaccination. Despite being the first, on December 5, 2020 with a vaccine of its own production – Sputnik V – Russia has vaccinated just over 70.8 million people with the complete schedule, which represents 58.2% of the population.

The Russian authorities admit that the vaccination campaign is progressing slowly mainly due to the reluctance of the population, and therefore offer various incentives, including gifts and cash payments, for citizens to go to the inoculation centers.

In Poland, 45.9 million doses of Covid vaccines have been administered to date, which has allowed 20.9 million people to be fully immunized, 55% of the population.

According to data on the 16th of the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the European Union currently has an average vaccination rate of 67.2% of the total population, but some countries are very late, case on all from Slovakia (46.8%), Bulgaria (26.6%) or Romania (39.6%).

In North Macedonia and Albania, the rate of vaccination is worse and only 39% of Macedonians and 35.5% of Albanians have received the full schedule. The booster doses also limp, and both countries have given about 4% of their population the support injection.

At a good pace

In Germany, 70.7% of the population has received the complete schedule of the coronavirus vaccine and 35% even the booster dose. However, the Government has proposed to accelerate the campaign during the end of the year and has set a goal that by January 7, 80% of the population will have received at least the first dose of the vaccine.

The campaign, after a dynamic start, stalled due to the resistance of part of the population to the vaccine, which has sparked a debate in Germany about the possibility of establishing mandatory vaccination.

In Denmark a total of 11.5 million doses have been administered and the vaccinated population amounts to 4.53 million people. The population to which the complete regimen has been administered reaches 77.7%.

Sweden has vaccinated a total of 7.36 million people with the full schedule and 17.3 million doses have been administered, which means that 71% of the population residing in the country have been vaccinated with all doses.

In France, until this Wednesday there were 51.55 million people who had received the complete guideline, representing 76.8% of the country’s population as a whole, 89.3% of those who were likely to have been immunized, because they were over 12 years old. . Because in the case of children from 5 to 11 years old, the injections – always on a voluntary basis – began precisely this past Wednesday.

And in Belgium, 76% of the population have received the complete schedule of the Covid vaccination, with 29% of them already having the booster dose.

In Switzerland, 66% of the population has the complete vaccination schedule against Covid and 18% of the Swiss already have the booster dose, available to all adults. In some traditionally conservative cantons the percentage is below 60%, and news has even been published in the press from small towns whose entire population has refused to be vaccinated, although the majority opinion in the country is in favor of vaccines.

Mandatory vaccination?

In Greece, 16.5 million doses of the vaccines authorized in the European Union have been administered, and although the campaign got off to a strong start in 2020, to date only 64.2% have received the full schedule, and 68.8% a dose .

The government of the conservative Kyriakos Mitstotakis has imposed the mandatory vaccination for those over 60 years from mid-January, as it already did with the health sector.

In other countries, vaccinations are mandatory for health workers, with the risk of losing their job and the use of the so-called Covid passport has become widespread to prevent, if they do not have it, access to social activities, such as going to bars, restaurants or cultural events, a way of encouraging people to get punctured.
