Dozens of flights canceled at Fort Lauderdale and Miami airports amid strong rebound in COVID-19 by omicron

The omicron variant has hit the staff of the big airlines.

Dozens of flights were canceled this Saturday morning in the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and in the Miami International Airport (MIA) amid a rebound in infections due to the omicron variant of covid-19, which raised cases this week to more than 300% compared to the previous one.

According to officials at both South Florida airports, there were more than 20 flights canceled at FLL and at least 24 flights canceled in MIA, because the omicron variant is having an “impact” on the crews, according to television Local 10.

Florida broke its record of confirmed covid-19 cases in one day by reporting 31,758 new infections this Friday, official sources reported.

The 31,758 cases are attributed to last Thursday, according to data published this Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from the United States.

This Saturday, first thing in the morning, the long lines of cars returned to public spaces such as Tropical Park, in downtown Miami, waiting for the test center installed there to open.

State and local authorities urge residents to receive vaccinations and boosters of these, and to avoid meeting with people who are not protected, especially in closed places.

The most recent weekly report from the Florida Department of Health, released last night, showed that 111,990 people received their first vaccination in the state last week.

However, the most worrisome data in the document was the 125,201 new infections reported from December 17 to 23, an increase of 324% compared to the 29,519 reported the previous week.

Thus, Florida’s positivity rate has climbed to 13.8% this past week, compared to 5.3% last week and 2.6% the previous week.

The peak of the omicron variant in Florida has been sudden, as the state had reported fewer than 2,000 new cases per day for several weeks from late October to early December.

The omicron variant has hit the staff of the big airlines and caused the cancellation of almost 5,000 flights worldwide on Christmas Eve and Christmas, when millions of people travel to reunite with their families.

More than a quarter of the flights canceled during Christmas Eve and Christmas They had as their destination or starting point the United States, where cases have grown 50% in the last week after the overwhelming advance of omicron. (I)
