Russia announces end of maneuvers near Ukrainian border

More than 10,000 Russian soldiers returned to their bases after a month of maneuvers in southern Russia, Near the border ukrainian, the center of tensions between the two countries, Moscow reported on Saturday.

The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement that the “combat training” exercises took place in various military fields near Ukraine: in the Russian regions of Volgograd, Rostov, Krasnodar and the annexed Crimean peninsula.

In its statement, the Russian army does not specify, however, to which bases the troops have returned.

“In order to guarantee a high state of alert during the holidays at the military sites in the southern military district, guard units, reinforcements and forces will be assigned to deal with possible emergency situations,” the statement added.

For more than a month, the West has accused Russia of gathering tens of thousands of soldiers near the Ukrainian border, with its sights set on a possible military aggression against Kiev, something that Moscow denies.
