Russia sanctions Google and Meta with a fine of more than one hundred million dollars for advertising prohibited content

The Russian Justice imposed this Friday high fines on Google and Meta, which together they exceed one hundred million dollars, for non-compliance with local laws. A Moscow court sentenced Google to shell out 7,220,000 rubles (nearly $ 99 million) for breaking local law.

In turn, another Moscow court did the same with Meta, the owner of Facebook, sentenced to pay a fine of 1,990,000 million rubles (about 2.7 million dollars). This is the first time that both companies, repeatedly reprimanded for non-compliance with Russian law, receive a fine of such a high amount, calculated based on the income of these computer giants.

Since February, the Russian telecommunications regulator, Roskomnadzor, has sent administrative protocols against various social networks and messaging applications to Justice due to its reluctance to remove “prohibited content” in this country.

The content to be removed is that referred to incitement of minors to suicide, child pornography, drug use or calls to participate in protests in favor of the jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalni. Previously, the Justice also fined other social networks such as Telegram, Twitter or TikTok for breach of laws.
