Gasoline and diesel cars currently constitute less than half of the European automotive market. More of them are registered than electric cars, which constitute only 12%. market.

In April, 913,995 new cars were registered in the European Union. Sales growth compared to March was 13.7%. ACEA considers seasonality to be one of the reasons for annual increases in car sales. Due to the date of Easter, drivers had two additional business days to buy a car compared to April last year.

Petrol and diesel still rule the automotive market

The European car market is still mainly composed of vehicles powered by gasoline or diesel fuel. In April, 328,967 petrol vehicles and 118,000 diesel cars were registered. In the case of the former, it is an increase of 7.3%. month to month. However, their market share decreased from 38.1%. up to 36 percent compared to the same month of the previous year.

In turn, cars with diesel engines maintain a constant market share at 13%. Interestingly, in many countries the demand for these cars has dropped significantly. In Italy by 21.1%, in Spain by 19.3% and in France by 18.1%. However, this was compensated by a sharp increase in interest in diesel cars in Germany. Their sales shot up by 28.2%.

Electric cars remain in the shadow

Electric cars still remain in the background. Their market share is consistently around 12%. In April, 108,552 new electric cars were registered in Europe, and 441,992 such cars since the beginning of the year. This is an increase of 6.4%. France and Belgium have a significant impact on this, where sales increased by 45.2%, respectively. and 41.6 percent

Meanwhile, in Germany, sales of electric cars dropped slightly, by 0.02%. However, it is still in this country that most such cars are registered. In April it was 29,740. In Poland, sales of electric cars are growing slower. In April, this dynamics decreased to 2.8%. from 3.5 percent recorded a year ago.

Hybrids are more popular. Last month, 265,992 such vehicles were registered in Europe. This is an increase of 33.1%. This increases their market share. Year on year this is an increase from 24.9%. up to 29.1 percent Let us also note that in April plug-in hybrids accounted for 6.8%. the entire car market, selling 62,148 units. Still, 48.9 percent the market belongs to cars with petrol and diesel engines.
