Russia offers help to Iran to find President Raisí’s helicopter and investigate the accident

Russia offered today to Iran its help both to search for the crashed helicopter in which its president, Ebrahim Raisí, was traveling, whose whereabouts are unknown, and to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.

“Russia is ready to offer all necessary help in the search for the missing helicopter and in the investigation of the causes of the incident”Maria Zajárova, Foreign Ministry spokesperson, told local agencies.

The diplomat stressed that Moscow is closely following information about the fate of the passengers of the presidential helicopter.

“We sincerely hope that they are alive and their lives and health are not in any danger,” he said.

The forced landing of the presidential helicopter occurred in the northwest of the country upon its return from the border with Azerbaijan, where Raisí met with the leader of the Caucasian country, Ilham Aliyev, to inaugurate a dam.

Raisi made an official visit to Russia last December, where he was received by the head of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin, whom he congratulated in March on his re-election for a fifth term.

Russia and Iran have strengthened their relations in recent years, especially since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, since Tehran supplies Moscow with Shahed drones with which it bombs the territory of the neighboring country.

Both countries have signed a joint declaration against Western economic sanctions against them and have condemned the disproportionate use of force by Israel against the Gaza Strip.

Largely thanks to Russian support, Iran joined the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in 2023 and last January into the BRICS group of emerging economies.
