Mexico could be part of the top three touristic destinations globally if the perspective of unsafety and strengthens coordinated actions in terms of tourism security, experts in the field agreed.
“We want not to be in the top 10, but in the top 3 in receiving international tourism, and to do so it is necessary to implement a strategy at the country level that proposes to amalgamate the tourism service providers with the municipalities, the states of the country and the national sector”considered Manuel Flores Sonduk, tourism security specialist.
During the first International Tourist Security Colloquium held in the Mexican capital, the expert considered it necessary to implement a joint model at the country level that makes it possible to address insecurity problems that afflict both Mexicans and foreigners who enjoy the country’s tourist destinations.
“That a joint model be implemented that allows walking on the same route, applying the models that have worked in various parts of the world”Flores explained, Sonduk explained that tourism in Mexico represents the 8.5% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and assured that if Mexico manages to strengthen the perception of security, it will be able to climb the ranking.
In this sense, the specialist presented the National Tourist Security Plan, which, he said, consists of a strategy that step by step “aims to specifically address crimes that directly impact tourists” as is the case of trafficking, disappearances and other crimes such as assaults and homicides.
This plan was delivered to Senator Rogelio Márquez Valdivia, who is a member of the Tourism Commission in the Upper House of Congress.
The former Secretary of Public Security of Acapulco and former director of the Tourist Police of the capital Mexico City, highlighted that Mexico has gastronomy, culture, museums and beaches, among other attractions, which facilitates the challenge of improving tourist attraction.
“I assure you, in terms of tourism, France is better and that the country itself USA“We have a lot to offer tourists and all we need is to implement this national plan that changes the perception of Mexico in terms of tourism and protects visitors from their arrival, their stay and until their departure,” said.
He explained that the main objective is to improve the perception of Mexican citizens and foreigners, as he highlighted that security is the main factor that a person evaluates when deciding to travel to any tourist destination.
“If we do it, I have no doubt that in the short term of two years we will reach the top 5 and in the medium term the top 3,” he insisted. Meanwhile, Senator Márquez Valdivia promised to promote this Tourism Security Plan from the legislature.
At the time, Alejandro Zúñiga Bernal, an expert in tourism protection mechanisms, recalled that the UN-Tourism estimates that the volume of tourism business already equals oil and food exports internationally.
Zúñiga Bernal pointed out that the document proposes harmonization in legal matters at the national level, “so it is essential to legislate on the matter.”
He also proposed standardizing the definition of Tourism Security, establishing specific responsibilities for each sector of the entire tourism chain.
In addition to creating a National Tourist Attention Center with headquarters in the 230 vocational places; as well as the creation of a Mexico Seguro seal, among other things.
