Gaza is already the region with the most displaced people in history. Only from October to December of last year, 3.4 million forced displacements were recorded and we are talking about a population of 2.2 million. This is a new record since records began, according to the Internal Displacement Observatory (IDMC), the world authority that analyzes this phenomenon.

According to the IDMC, the conflicts in Gaza, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo increased the number of internally displaced people in the world. In the annual report published this Tuesday they confirmed that Almost 76 million people remained outside their homes at the end of 2023 due to armed conflict or natural disasters.

In the report they also emphasize the times that displaced people move. And it is that most have fled more than once. For example, in the Gaza city of Rafah, some residents have already accumulated five or six displacements within the same Palestinian enclave, the UN said last week.

The majority are escaping from situations like the one experienced this Tuesday in Gaza in which Israel has attacked a UNRWA schoola supposedly protected center, where 20 people have been killed.

The Israeli army said in a statement on Tuesday that it had killed “approximately 15 members of terrorist organizations” in Gaza who were in a “Hamas war room” on the premises of a school belonging to the agency that helps Palestinian refugees. of the United Nations (UNRWA) in the Nuseirat camp, in the center of the strip.

“The (air) attack was carried out using precise munitions to minimize damage to uninvolved civilians,” clarifies the statement, which is imprecise regarding the number of insurgents killed.

Since the beginning of the invasion of Gaza, Israel has attacked UNRWA schools and other buildings – which serve as a refuge for displaced Palestinians – alleging that Hamas fighters operate from there.

Israeli bombings on the population of the strip have already caused the death of 35,000 Gazans, a third of whom were minors.
