Ecuador announces that vaccination against COVID-19 will be mandatory

The Ecuadorian government declared vaccination against the COVID-19 due to the increase in infections and the circulation of new variants of this virus such as omicron, which at an international level is putting pressure on hospital systems.

In a statement it was specified that this country has the amount of biologicals “necessary to immunize the entire population” and explained that vaccination is a right that the State guarantees through public policies, programs, actions and timely services for the promotion and comprehensive health care.

He added that immunization will not be mandatory for people who prove any medical condition or contraindication, prior to the presentation of a certificate.

This week, the Special Operations Committee, which governs policies to confront the pandemic, ordered the mandatory presentation of the vaccination certificate in public areas or for non-essential activities, reduced the capacity of places such as restaurants, cinemas, theaters, and it suspended massive public and private shows of all kinds.

As of Tuesday, December 23, 12.43 million people, out of 17.3 million inhabitants, have the complete vaccination schedule, which represents 77.2%, and more than 920,000 citizens have a third dose.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, at the end of February of last year, the contagion of 537,032 Ecuadorians and the death of 33,597 have been registered.
