The United States Government announced this Monday that it canceled the visas of several Colombian businessmen for facilitating the maritime transportation of migrants who seek to get from “irregular way” towards the North American country.
Washington He did not detail the names or the number of people affected by this new measure, but he specified that those sanctioned are owners of companies that “offer maritime transport that facilitates irregular movement” of people on the continent.
State Department spokesperson Matthew Millernoted in a statement that visa restrictions “They send a signal that no one should take advantage of vulnerable migrants: not smugglers, not private companies, not public officials.”.
The official added that this measure is included in the efforts of the United States, together with allied countries in the region, against whom “explode” the migration.
Colombia is an important transit country on the new migratory routes to the United States due to its geographical position as a bridge between South and Central America and as it does not require visas for several nationalities.
In the last year, a route through the Caribbean island of Saint Andrewwhich is part of Colombian territory and is close to the coast of Nicaragua. In clandestine boats or vessels from the archipelago to the Central American country, migrants manage to avoid the dangerous Darién jungle, which divides Colombia from Panama.
This journey through the Caribbean Sea has put hundreds of migrants at risk and according to figures from the Colombian Attorney General’s Office, in 2023 more than 100 shipwrecks of people of different nationalities were recorded.
