British gov’t rules out more measures before Christmas after omicron study

British Health Minister Sajid Javid confirmed Thursday that the government will not make any announcement on new restrictions before Christmas after a study indicated that the omicron variant appears less virulent than the delta.

“We have no plans to make any further announcements this week. Despite the caution we are all taking, people should enjoy Christmas with family and friends, of course,” the minister said in a statement to the media.

Despite everything, Javid stressed that the Executive keeps the situation under review on this wave of covid.

“We will continue to analyze the data and if we need to do something else, we will do it, but there will be nothing before Christmas,” he said.

According to a study published yesterday by Imperial College London, hospital admissions of at least one night are reduced by between 40% and 45% among patients with the omicron variant of the coronavirus compared to the delta.

The Government recently established the obligation to wear a mask in public transport and shops in England, as well as the presentation of covid certificates to enter large events, while other regions have taken similar measures and suspended the massive end-of-year celebrations .

The United Kingdom yesterday reported 106,122 new daily infections of coronavirus, for the first time above 100,000 cases, and about 13,000 above the previous record for the pandemic, registered last week. (I)
