Carrefour Polska introduced edible insects to its offer last year. It has been enriched with products from Foodbugs and Robaki Z Paki, which specialize in “insect” products. Initially, the offer covered only a few stores in Warsaw – today it covers a total of 38 outlets.
Carrefour is expanding the offer of other stores with edible insects
The Carrefour Polska chain will announce the introduction of edible insects to its offer for the first time in April 2023. As emphasized in the announcement, thanks to a special authorization from the European Union, two new species of insects have been introduced for sale for food purposes – the shiny beetle and the house cricket. As explained by M.Sc. Eng. Radosław Bogusz from the Warsaw University of Life Sciences, eating insects has many advantages. – Insects have many valuable nutrients. They are a source of high-quality protein with a favorable amino acid profile and fat, which is characterized by a high content of unsaturated fatty acids, he says.
– Current research also shows that insects contain bioactive peptides with potentially health-promoting properties. These peptides can inhibit the activity of enzymes responsible for the development of the so-called metabolic syndrome – associated with the development of type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular diseases in humans. Edible insects also contain minerals and vitamins, as well as chitin with properties similar to dietary fiber – says M.Sc. Eng. Radoslaw Bogusz.
Carrefour expands its offer. “We are seeing very positive results”
As noted in the announcement, it is also about promoting the activities of young companies, which can thus expand the scope of their operations. – After the first stage of testing the offer of edible insects in our stores, we are observing very positive results. That is why we decided to expand our assortment and introduce it to other Carrefour stores – explains Piotr Lubiewa-Wieleżyński, Director of the Commercial Format and Concepts Development Department at Carrefour Polska. – It is also important for us to cooperate with young companies and start-ups which, thanks to cooperation with us, can present their offer to a wide range of consumers – comments Piotr Lubiewa-Wieleżyński.
Initially, edible insects were available only in 5 Carrefour stores in Warsaw – Westfield Mokotów, Carrefour BIO at ul. Marszałkowska 87, Westfield Arkadia, Carrefour Market at ul. Anny German 20 and Carrefour BIO at ul. Jana Kazimierza 50. Over time, the offer appeared in other stores, and, according to reports, another 11 outlets have recently joined this group, giving a total number of 38 stores where we can find insect delicacies.
