In addition, the regulations include limits on reducing the amount of plastic packaging in EU countries. By 2030, their number is to be 5%. less, by 2035 – by 10%, and by 2040 – by 15%.
Changes also for the hotel and catering industry
The changes are also expected to affect the hotel industry. It will have to give up small plastic containers for cosmetic products for guests, e.g. shampoos or shower gels. Disposable plastic bags will also disappear from stores and markets. The regulations also provide a framework for recycling and reusing packaging. Restaurants and bars that sell takeaway drinks and meals will have to give customers the opportunity to use their own container and, for example, buy coffee in their own mug.
Member States should also ensure that at least 90% of waste is separately collected annually. disposable plastic bottles and metal beverage cans. These requirements must be met by 2029. By then, European Union countries should implement deposit return systems for these packaging. Countries that will achieve a level of separate collection above 80% in 2026 will be exempt from the introduction of the new system. and present their intention to increase the target to 90%.
