Noboa proclaims victory in the referendum and assures that Ecuador said “’Yes’ to the future”

The president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboahe stated this Tuesday, after winning the ‘Yeah’ in nine of the eleven questions of the referendum held on Sunday at his initiative, that the result was a “victory of the people” because “the country said ‘Yes’ to the future”.

In his first public intervention since the plebiscite was held, almost two days after the results were known, Noboa expressed his satisfaction with the broad support received for the issues that seek to strengthen the State’s fight against organized crime gangs.

With more than 95% Of the votes counted until this Tuesday, the victory of ‘Yes’ was consolidated in nine of the eleven questions related to security issues; while the ‘No’ took hold in the economic reforms related to legalizing hourly labor contracts and allowing international arbitrations on investments in any jurisdiction.

“After the country said yes to the future, we will not give in even one step to violence, corruption and impunity,” Noboa stated during a speech in the southern coastal province of El Oro, bordering Peru.

“We have more tools to judge these crimes and toughen penalties for their perpetrators.””added the president, in reference to the initiative approved to increase penalties for a series of crimes related to organized crime, including terrorism and its financing.

The proposals raised on security obtained between 75% and the 61% support.

In addition to toughening penalties, they also imply that the Armed Forces permanently participate alongside the Police in operations against organized crime and that Ecuadorians can be extradited when required by the Justice of other countries.

They also supported the creation of a court system in constitutional matters, military surveillance around prisons, the equipping of state forces with weapons seized from crime, the creation of the crime of possession of weapons for the exclusive use of the Police and Forces. Armed forces and an express mechanism for the expropriation of illicit assets.

Noboa asserted that “they will not stop the new Ecuador.” “This victory belongs to the people and those who want a better future and for their children to live better than them,” he pointed out.

In Noboa’s statements, provided by the Communication Secretariat of the Presidency, the president did not mention the two questions where ‘No’ won, and which for former president Rafael Correa (2007-2017) constitute a “resounding defeat” for the ruler because in his opinion they were “the two questions that (really) mattered to him.”

Noboa responded to these statements by former President Correa in another event held in El Oro, where he reiterated that the result of the plebiscite was favorable for him.

“From a very young age I was a sports fan and one of the first things I learned in my life was to see scoreboards, and on a scoreboard in soccer, if you won 9 to 2, you won. There are others who never understood that part. “Always the highest number is the one that wins,” declared Noboa to applause from the audience.
