The unusual rains torrential in Dubai provoked floods on modern highways and chaos in the airport Wednesday after a storm brought record rainfall.
The 254 millimeters of rain, equivalent to the rainfall that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) receives in two years, generated a monumental traffic jam on the six-lane highways and a 70-year-old man died in Ras Al Khaimah, police reported.
Official media reported that rainfall was a record since 1949, before the formation of the Emirates in 1971.
Authorities recommended passengers not to travel to Dubai airport, which has the highest traffic in the world, except in cases of extreme need, as flights continue to be delayed and others are diverted.

The storm hit the Emirates and Bahrain since Monday night, after passing through Oman, where it left 18 dead.
Climatologist Friederike Otto, a specialist in evaluating the role of climate change in extreme weather events, told AFP that it is “very likely” that global warming would worsen storm conditions.
