The United States prepares with its allies sanctions against Iran for the attack on Israel

The secretary of Treasure from USA, Janet Yellen, announced this Tuesday that he will take advantage of the spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and of World Bank (WB) that begin this Tuesday to coordinate a new round of sanctions against Iran for the attack on Israel.

In a press conference, Yellen said that the United States “will not hesitate” in working with its allies to end the activity “malignant” and “destabilizing” from Tehran.

As Yellen explained, Iran’s attack against Israel, the first launched by Tehran directly against Israeli territory, underlines the importance of using the “economic tools” that the United States has to confront Iran.

The United States is studying with its G7 partners to impose more sanctions on Iran and designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist group.

Several countries have already designated the Revolutionary Guard, a branch of the Iranian Armed Forces created after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, as a terrorist group.

In 2019, the United States blacklisted the Revolutionary Guard of terrorist groups, while the Government of Canada said in January this year that it was studying ways to include the Revolutionary Guard on its list of terrorist organizations.

For its part, the European Union (EU) is currently studying new sanctions against Iran to contain its drone and missile programs, as announced on Sunday by the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

These efforts by the US and its allies to promote new sanctions against Iran come as several Western countries have urged Israel to show restraint and avoid a strong military response to Iran’s attack, at the risk of triggering a full-scale war. stopover in the Middle East.

The spring meetings of the WB and the IMF taking place this week in Washington will bring together the world’s main finance and economic ministers.

Furthermore, in parallel to these events, there are scheduled to be meetings of the economic and finance ministers of the G20 and also the G24, a group that brings together developing countries, including Iran.
