KPO came to Poland. “The largest transfer from the EU in the history of our membership”

Poland received PLN 27 billion from the European Union under the KPO. “The EU is not only money,” commented Katarzyna Pełczyñska-Nałêcz, Minister of Funds and Regional Policy.

“PLN 27 billion. Poland has just received the largest transfer from the EU in the history of our membership. Being in the EU is profitable, but the EU is not only about money, which our predecessors have forgotten. We are united by the values: democracy, equal opportunities, rule of law, freedoms. civic!” – wrote the head of the Ministry of Funds, Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz, on the X platform.

The European Commission finally approved the payment of EUR 6.3 million from the KPO to Poland. The Commission gave its initial consent at the end of February 2024. Then Poland’s application had to go through EU committees and obtain the consent of member states, which happened at the end of March. The application then went to the European Commission for final approval. The money was not transferred to the Polish account immediately because the Commission had to borrow it on the financial markets. This is how the EU Reconstruction Fund works.

Funds from the KPO for Poland have been blocked for the last 2 years due to the Commission’s allegations regarding the lack of independence of the judiciary. The Commission changed its mind after receiving a justice reform plan from the new government. – We are impressed by your efforts to restore the rule of law in Poland – said Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during her visit to Warsaw at the end of February.

After a few days, a preliminary decision was made to withdraw the first money. The entire pool available to Poland, i.e. almost EUR 60 billion, has already been unlocked. This year, the government wants to submit applications for a total of EUR 24 billion. All money must be used by the end of 2026.

The money from the first tranche of the KPO will be allocated, among others, for investments in clean air – thermal modernization of single-family houses, subsidies for replacing old furnaces with new ones, as well as for access to very fast Internet, subsidizing childcare places in nurseries and for the modernization of railway and hazardous crossings. points on the roads.
