The president of the Government, Pedro Sanchezhas already begun his tour of Europe to support the recognition of the Palestinian state and take steps towards a solution to the conflict in the Middle East. This Friday he visited his Norwegian and Irish counterparts, waiting to do so next Monday with the Portuguese Prime Minister in Madrid and then travel to Slovenia and Belgium as the last stops on his tour of the continent.

These meetings, all with leaders with ideas about Palestine similar to those of the President of the Government, take place before Wednesday and Thursday of next week, where a meeting of the European Council will be held in Brussels in which the issue is expected to be a matter to be discussed.

The first stop of Pedro Sánchez has been in Norwaywhere he met with the country’s prime minister, Jonas Gahr Store. There, Store has explained that “Norway and Spain have a very similar vision” on the recognition of a Palestinian State for which no date has yet been set. Of course, despite claiming to be “ready” for it, Store has stressed that “the final decision has not been decided, we will continue to be in contact (with Pedro Sánchez).”

After that first meeting, the president of the Government has traveled to Dublin to meet with the Irish Prime Minister, Simon Harris. Ireland was one of the other three countries (along with Slovenia and Malta, which signed a declaration on March 22 in which They showed their willingness to recognize the State of Palestine at the time they consider most appropriate. The text was signed by the Irish Prime Minister at the time, Leo Varadkar, but this week he has been replaced by Simon Harris and it is expected that this commitment to the recognition of Palestine will not be altered.

Despite the change of Irish leader, Simon Harris has indicated that “they will also go hand in hand” with Sánchez, in addition to seeking to “advance with the greatest number of allies.” A fruitful meeting where the President of the Government thanked Ireland for its support, but again highlighted that there is still no date for the recognition of the Palestinian State.

Slovenia and Belgium, upcoming meetings

After visits to Norway and Ireland, Pedro Sánchez will receive the newly appointed Portuguese Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, this Monday in Madridwhere it is expected that the recognition of the Palestinian State will be one of the topics to be discussed at the meeting.

After this meeting, The President of the Government will go to Slovenia to meet with his counterpart in the country, Robert Golobwhere it is predicted that he will join Norway and Ireland in the line of support for the recognition of the Palestinian State, since Golob already signed a declaration on March 22 in which he showed his willingness to recognize the State of Palestine.

Finally, Pedro Sánchez will travel to Belgium to meet Alexandre de Croo, Belgian Prime Minister. This meeting is also expected to extract a new union to the proposal to recognize the Palestinian State, since De Croo accompanied Sánchez during his trip in October to Israel and Palestine and has since been an ally for the socialist leader on this matter.

Four countries in one week. That is the agenda and tour that Pedro Sánchez has already begun in search of support in Europe for a proposal that he has already defended on repeated occasions: the end of the war in Gaza and the recognition of two states there.
