Uruguay and the US sign an agreement for the development of new technologies

Uruguay and USA signed this Wednesday a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in certain technologies critical and emerging, a fact that highlights a strategic issue for the South American country, how to be more competitive in terms of the technological ecosystem.

This was stated by the Uruguayan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Omar Paganini, who signed the document together with the United States Undersecretary of International Trade, Marisa Lago.

“Uruguay already has a very important relationship in its technology sector with the United States. In fact, they are our main market and a lot of technology also comes here from the United States. At this time when challenges appear every day with emerging issues, being able to sign this highlights an issue that is strategic for us, which is how to be more competitive in terms of our technological ecosystem.”said.

In that sense, he pointed out that the memorandum will provide a framework to value new technologies and also their regulatory framework – to the extent necessary – as well as participate in a discussion about the challenges that arise.

Likewise, the minister emphasized the areas involved, which he indicated are “cutting-edge and challenging.”

Within these are semiconductors, Artificial Intelligence, cybersecurity, telecommunications, biotechnology and clean energy.

“Paths of cooperation are opening up that will mean opportunities to develop our local capabilities and open markets. What it is about is taking advantage of it, working with technicians from the United States with those from Uruguay to improve our technical cooperation and also to enable the next development steps that are going to come.”he concluded.

For his part, Lago highlighted the importance of signing the aforementioned memorandum and highlighted qualities of Uruguay such as its great internet connectivity or its use of renewable energy.

As reported by the Foreign Ministry of the South American country, both nations intend to deepen their bilateral and multilateral collaboration on the main critical and emerging technologies, including “identifying opportunities to support the development and use of relevant international standards for technologies and promoting interoperability and global compatibility with them.”
