Fifteen days after a new campaign of attacks against the Ukrainian electrical system began, Russia hit energy infrastructures again in three regions of Ukraine in their drone and missile attacks in recent hours, as reported today by the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy.
“The enemy twice attacked equipment of a high-voltage substation in the Zaporizhia region (southeast) with drones; damage has occurred to the equipment”the Ministry explained in a statement.
The Ministry also speaks of damage to a high-voltage line in the Kharkov region (northeast) that has affected the operation of another power substation. Two other high-voltage lines stopped working in the Dnipropetrovsk region (center), which has also been attacked with drones.
In addition, fragments from a Russian missile shot down by Ukrainian defenses in Dnipropetrovsk have generated an explosion in a gas infrastructure in the region, causing damage to a building.
The Ukrainian state electricity company, Ukrenergo, has also reported damage to the equipment of an electrical substation in that same region.
According to Ukrenergo, about 400 localities in the regions of Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, Sumi, Kharkiv and Kherson are without electricity due to Russian attacks or hostilities in front or border regions with Russia.
Russia In the last two weeks, it has launched the worst attacks against the Ukrainian energy system since the end of 2022, when millions of Ukrainians spent weeks without light or heat due to the bombing of their power and thermal plants. Hundreds of thousands of electricity system subscribers suffered power outages in these latest waves of attacks.
The Russian offensive against Ukrainian provinces such as Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk have revealed the vulnerability of the strategic infrastructures of most regions of the country to Russian air attacks.
To remedy this situation, President Volodymyr Zelensky has asked Ukraine’s allies to urgently send more air defense systems to be able to safely protect more parts of the national territory.
