The Argentine Justice has ordered an investigation into the possible responsibility of the Government of Nicolas Maduro by “alleged crimes” committed in Venezuelawithin the framework of “principle of universal justice”official sources reported this Friday.
The decision was supported by judges Leopoldo Bruglia, Pablo Bertuzzi and Mariano Llorens, from Chamber I of the Federal Chamber of Buenos Aires, who, in their ruling, indicated that “it is appropriate to assume the universal jurisdiction and extraterritorial jurisdiction of the judicial bodies of the Argentine Republic for their due judgment.”
The investigation was promoted in 2023 by federal prosecutor Carlos Stornelli, after complaints filed by the Argentine Forum for the Defense of Democracy (FADD) and the Clooney Foundation for Justice (CFJ, for its acronym in English), which seek to determine “if human rights violations were committed in Venezuela with evidence of crimes against humanity by the Venezuelan security forces against the opposition,” reported the FADD.
According to the ruling, the proceedings must be carried out “with speed” for being “essential to counterbalance the criminal actions carried out by the state authorities of the Venezuelan government.”
“If the legal requirements are met, we proceed to call for an investigation of those accused here,” Bruglia and Bertuzzi added.
To this, Llorens added that it is “undelayable” let the judge resolve “call for an investigative statement” to Maduro, to deputy Diosdado Cabello – considered number two of Chavismo – “and all those identified as responsible” and that those responsible for “serious violations of human rights and crimes against humanity” reported.
“It is a historical fact because he (Maduro) will be investigated for torture, forced disappearance of people and imprisonment. (…) It is a true act of justice to put on the bench those who have shed the blood of their people,” the president of the FADD, Waldo Wolff, published on the social network
The one who has been Minister of Security of the City of Buenos Aires since last December recalled that the members of the FADD were “firm” in “defense of democracy” at the beginning of 2023, when they protested against the participation of Maduro – who ultimately did not travel. at the Celac Summit in Argentina, the country that held the temporary presidency -under the Administration of the Peronist Alberto Fernández (2019-2023)-.
For her part, Elisa Trotta, general secretary of the FADD, expressed in a statement that “The world must be made smaller for those who seek to remain in power through barbarism” and? “Torture, forced disappearance, imprisonment and selective persecution are crimes against humanity,” that must be investigated, in addition to the International Criminal Court (ICC), “for the justice of countries like Argentina.”
Recently, after the disappearance of activist Rocío San Miguel, arrested on February 9, after being accused of her alleged link to a conspiracy that included an assassination plan against Maduro, the FADD expanded its complaint “for crimes against humanity.”
This news is known in the midst of the electoral scenario in Venezuela, a country that will hold its presidential elections on July 28, in which Maduro seeks to be re-elected.
