The main spokesperson of the de facto regime taliban in AfghanistanZabiullah Mujahid, confirmed that two American citizens They are detained in the country in a prison controlled by the Taliban government for violating the rules of the Afghan fundamentalists.
“It is not clear the purpose for which the two Americans came to Afghanistan, but whatever purpose they come for, they have to obey the law of Afghanistan,” Mujahid said in a video message broadcast by the TOLO News channel.
The spokesperson assured that conversations have already begun about these cases, but did not give details of the identities of both prisoners. According to Mujahid, the Americans were detained for “the violation of the law in Afghanistan.”
Mujahid also stressed that, apart from Americans, an unknown number of foreigners are detained in the country due to violation of the Islamist regime’s rules. “Anyone traveling to Afghanistan must obey the laws of the country and if the law is broken, they will definitely face legal action,” he added.
Despite the lack of official details about the names and alleged misdemeanors of those detained, family members and media have denounced the arrest of American Ryan Corbett in August 2022 for more than a year and have called for his release since then.
Corbett owns a consulting business and worked as a subcontractor for several NGOs in Afghanistan, where he lived for more than a decade. This was until the withdrawal of international troops and the fall of Kabul into the hands of the Taliban, in August 2021. In January 2022, according to his own family, the American returned at his own expense to renew his business visa and pay their workers.
It is worth remembering that the United States, like most states and international organizations, does not recognize the Taliban government nor does it have diplomatic representation in the country since the withdrawal of its troops.
