The deadliest bridge collapses of the last 20 years

The collapse of a large bridge in the city of Baltimore (state of Maryland, east) on Tuesday paralyzed one of the ports busiest shopping malls USA and also forced the emergency services to deploy search operations for at least six people after the incident.

Below is a compilation of bridge collapses that caused at least 20 deaths or missing people in the last 20 years around the world:

2022: 137 deaths in India

137 people die, including almost 50 children, after the collapse of a 150-year-old suspension bridge in the Indian state of Gujarat, days after its reopening following renovation work.

Hundreds of people had gathered at the Morbi bridge to celebrate the last day of the Diwali festival.

Security camera footage showed the bridge moving, with some people apparently swinging it deliberately, before it suddenly gave way, sending people tumbling into a river, while others clung to the debris.

2021: 26 deaths in Mexico

An elevated stretch of track in Mexico City’s subway system collapsed in May of that year, causing a passenger train to crash in a crash that killed 26 people and injured dozens.

The incident in the Latin American megalopolis damaged confidence in a transportation system used daily by millions.

An investigation concluded that the accident was the product of both structural failures and a lack of system maintenance.

2018: 43 deaths in Italy

On August 14, 2018, a segment of the Morandi Bridge, in the city of Genoa, collapsed, killing 43 people.

The bridge was part of the A10 motorway, a key road connecting France and Italy in northwestern Italy.

The structure gave way under torrential rain, causing dozens of vehicles and their passengers to fall into the abyss. In addition to the 43 dead, another 16 people were injured.

It was the deadliest accident of its kind in Europe since 2001. The bridge was rebuilt in record time and reopened in 2020.

2016: 26 dead in Kolkata

On March 31, in India, the collapse of a highway bridge in Calcutta caused at least 26 deaths. Rescue services extracted nearly one hundred injured people from the pile of concrete and beams resulting from the collapse of this portion of the elevated highway.

2011: disasters in India

On October 23, in India, a bridge collapsed under the weight of people attending a festival near the city of Darjeeling (northeast). The accident caused at least 32 deaths.

Less than a week later, around thirty people lost their lives in the collapse of a pedestrian bridge that crossed a river in the state of Arunachal Pradesh (northeast).

2007: Nepal and China

On August 13, in China, 64 people were killed and 22 injured when a bridge collapsed in the central province of Hunan. The construction, 328 meters long, had just been completed.

In Nepal, on December 25, a bridge filled with pilgrims heading to a religious festival collapsed, leaving at least 16 dead and 25 missing. At the time of the accident, about 400 people were on the footbridge that crossed the Bheri River, 380 km west of the capital Kathmandu. A few hundred people managed to swim to shore.

2006: Pakistan and India

On August 5, in Pakistan, the collapse of a bridge in Mardan, a city located 50 km from Peshawar, in the northwest of the country, hit by intense monsoon rains, left 40 dead and many people missing.

In India, on December 2, 34 people lost their lives when a 150-year-old bridge collapsed on a passenger train at a station in the eastern state of Bihar.
